Also you can technically consider Roy a major fire emblem character considering he was the main protagonist of the 6th game. But saying Roy is minor is like saying someone's minor just for not being in smash bros which means that Toad must be a very minor Mario character despite the fact he's been in almost all the mario games since Super Mario Brothers.
Lol I hate Toad. Their job is to protect Princess Peach, right? In Super Mario Galaxy, when Bowser took Peach, the Toad guard was HIDING BEHIND PEACH. What a terrible guard.
I'd bet you'd say Ness is a major character when he was only the main protagonist of the second mother game even though you said Roy was minor.
However Ness makes a cameo in mother 3.
ALSO, Ice Climbers, Shiek, and Lucas have also only been in one game outside of the smash bros series.
Young Link was cut from brawl because he's a clone(BULLSHIT to your "roy being deleted cause he's a clone" theory) and the fact that brawl's link was from twilight princess and still having Young Link wouldn't make much sense since the ocarina of time link wasn't there(cause how would you call him "Young Link?")
Ness has been in the first 2 smash brothers. Of course hed be in the 3rd one. Roy, Ganondorf, Young Link, Falco, Dr. Mario, and Pichu were clones, but Falco and Ganondorf stayed because, well, they need a villain for Zelda, and they were running low on StarFox characters.
And you probably said roy was minor due to him only being in smash bros melee

At the same time however you don't have to be classic to be in smash bros, look at fucking Lucario. He's from fucking 2007(unless counting his movie debut) and Lucas is from 2006.
They had to keep all of the charcters from the original Smash brothers game, because itd be awkward. Still, I wonder why they chose Jigglypuff outta all those Pokemon back then...
Also, ROB? I cant believe it. They were better off just making him a bad guy for the SSE. Waste of charcter space. They coulda added MegaMan or Geno. They were gonna add Geno, but those assholes Square-Enix stepped in and said that the character was theirs, and they couldn't use him.
Next time, they should only have 2 stages per series, unless its a huge series, like Mario, Zelda, Kirby or Pokemon, then there would be 3 or 4.

Actually I never thought Toads were there to gaurd the princess that much. I kinda thought that they were citizens to princess Peaches kingdom. Granted some might be body gaurds as a profesion, but the majority of Toads were just living there. There just kinda the shitty backround characters to add depth. Because it really wouldn't make sence to have a kingdom with noone in it.
BUT PEACH HAS NO OTHER CHOICE. Who else is she gonna hire? The Koopas? She couldn't cause Bowser's the KOOPA KING. What else is left? There really isn't any other intelligent characters left. Maybe she could get the football players from super mario world.

Well its probably for the best that Nintendo cant get to Geno. Older characters tend to get ruined If brought back, sonic being the most ruined. Sonic 1-3 were the last good sonic games. As soon as sega let sonic off their system it went downhill.

Each pokemon could have their own smash or they can combine them again. Either way, mudkip's smash should be a swarm of mudkips just yeling MUD!KIP! for 10 minutes, causeing your enemy to leave the match, rendering you the victor by default.
